The SBB has completed significant network extensions with the Rail 2000 project in 2005. Still under construction are the two base tunnels through the Alps, which shall be opened in 2008 (Lötschberg) respectively 2015 (Gotthard). During the next years, the financing of further network extensions will be limited. Therefore, the focus will be set on small investments that may be realised in stages and offer a short-term benefit. |

The extensive use of the railway network makes it more and more difficult to find within the dense traffic free paths for services ordered at short notice. To date, this task is performed at SBB without any IT support, the path manager is relying on his professional experience. |
